About this school
Founded in 1852, it is one of the oldest secondary schools in South India, formed as an Indian-managed alternative to British-run institutions and housed in an 1897 red-brick building designed by architect Henry Irwin. A boys' school on Big Street, Triplicane, its alumni include Nobel laureate Subrahmanyan Chandrasekhar, actor Kamal Haasan and Carnatic vocalist G.N. Balasubramaniam.
