Founded in 1856 as a boarding school under the patronage of Charles Canning, 1st Earl Canning, CGHS is one of Kolkata's oldest girls' schools and is now managed by the Methodist Church in India through the Calcutta Christian School Society. It is an English-medium ICSE/ISC school on Princep Street serving Playgroup to Year 12. Its motto is 'Deus et Humanitas'.
